The Head Waiter

A set of paintings inspired by a vintage Black Cat cigarette card, part of a university assignment about depicting job titles that have largely faded from everyday life. The Maître D' felt like a compelling subject, someone whose entire world narrows to the precise placement of a glass, the order of a table, the authority of a well organised room. The high end dining environment gave plenty to work with visually, and the dark, close compositions try to capture that sense of focused, unhurried precision.
