Apocalypse London

Inspired by the book 'London: The Biography' by Peter Ackroyd, I traveled around London location sketching and visiting famous sites, particularly places that were associated with death such as Highgate cemetery. I wanted to combine iconic features of London with an apocalyptic universe where tragedy has struck. The city that is usually so full and constantly moving reduced to a lonely wasteland where not a soul stirs.

I felt that painting inside an actual book would give my work a more powerful sense of narrative, allowing the viewer to decipher some of the text and be able to flip through the images. I also have always loved and been inspired by full page illustrations in storybooks, and since I couldn’t print out a full book, I painted straight onto the pages.
